John O'sullivan

A massive thank you to John O’Sullivan for being part of our series “A day in the life of…..” where we get to know our colleagues in the Telecoms industry. John is Senior Manager at 3Connected Solutions & IOT.

  1. Where are you from?

I am originally from Mallow, County Cork. Now, I live in Newbridge, County Kildare with my Wife and Kids.

  1. Did you go to College and if so what did you study?

I started my college life through the Defence Forces College Programme where I was awarded a Diploma in Telecommunications & Electronics. Since then I have completed a Degree in Technology Management from Institute of Tallaght, a Diploma in Business from Dublin Business School and a Senior Leadership Programme from the Irish Management Institute.

  1. Favourite holiday destination and sport?

Have to say I’ve a few places – South Africa, Canada and Hong Kong. Now, anywhere with my Wife and kids is my favourite.

  1. What’s still on your ‘bucket list’?

Run a marathon, climb Carrauntoohil again, would love to complete an Iron Man, have completed other things similar but it’s not the same and of course revisiting South Africa, Canada, Hong Kong and would love to see New Zealand and Australia. It’s a working in progress…

  1. What is your favourite movie?

Saving Private Ryan and Love Actually. Both ends of the spectrum there…

  1. Describe your personality in three words:

Determined, open and trustworthy

  1. What is your favourite App on your smartphone?

Endomondo and WhatsApp

  1. Where was you first job?

My first professional job was the Defence Forces, post college I was assigned to the Communications Corps. When I was in school, I worked with my Dad on the weekends. He is a Plumber. The skills learned came in handy later in life…

  1. What are your thoughts on work / life balance?

I am a believer in you do not have to be in the office to do a good job consistently. Although, showing up every now and again ensures you remember everyone’s faces!!

  1. Can you describe in one sentence what your company does?

For Consumer market, mobile and mobile data. For business market, mobile and non-mobile managed products and services

  1. Can you describe in one sentence what it is you do?

I managed a team of technical salespeople who listen to what our Customers need in the non-mobile space and help then make that a reality for their business.

  1. What is the best part of your job?

When I see our people in Three making things happen for our Customers. Gives me a sense of pride we could help even if in only a small way.

  1. What was the best career lesson that you have learned?

“The quickest way to getting what you want does not always come from running the shortest distance”. I received this advice from an Army Captain when I came 13th for 12 places on a Potential Officers course. Did not make sense to me when I was 22 but I have since learned that patience, determination and self-belief  is a part of that process.

  1. Any thoughts on the current health of the Irish telecoms sector?

Telecoms is one of those areas where if you stand still, you are going backwards. It never ceases to amaze me the strides being made in telecoms. The telecoms I started in and the telecoms of today are worlds apart.  Telecoms has become engrained in every industry now and post Corvid-19, telecoms will play a bigger role in home and working environments.

  1. What is your favourite saying or piece of advice for life in general?

Piece of advice and I think it was my Dad – “If it was easy, we’d all be doing it”. Think it sums me up. My interest always peaks in things that require hard work, thought and solutions. I’m not one for the easy way of doing things…
