A big thank you to Steven Farrell of SIRO for being part of our series “A day in the life of…..” where we get to know our colleagues in the Telecoms industry.  Steven is Account Director with SIRO since 2016 and is a veteran of the industry since his days in Esat Telecom in 1997.

  1. Where are you from?

I am from Wicklow, the Garden County of Ireland.

  1. Did you go to College and if so what did you study?

After finishing secondary school I went onto third level and completed a degree in Business and Marketing. In 2018, I graduated from Smurfit Business School with an MSc in Business. In 2020, I am start a course in Executive and business coaching.

  1. Favourite holiday destination and sport?

I am a big sports fan and my favourite sport has to be Gaelic football, it is in my blood. I played for a number of years and now I am coaching. I love to spend my holidays with my family in the sun.

  1. What’s still on your ‘bucket list’?

I would love a challenge so the idea of doing a triathlon is on my bucket list. I have run a marathon and cycled 150KM so I just need to work on my swimming. My wife is a swimming teacher so no excuses!!!

  1. What is your favourite movie?

That is a tough question: I am a big movie fan so my top 3 are The Shawshank Redemption, Man on Fire and In Pursuit of Happiness. My sons would tell you that The Champ is my favourite film but I will never admit that in public.

  1. Describe your personality in three words:

Passionate, Honest and Loyal

  1. What is your favourite App on your smartphone?

Google Maps

  1. Where was you first job?

Esat Telecom was my first real job and I loved every minute of it.

  1. What are your thought on work / life balance?

Family, work, study and football coaching are big parts of my life so getting the balance right all of the time can be a challenge but I am getting better with practice.

  1. Can you describe in one sentence what your company does?

SIRO is a joint venture between the ESB and Vodafone. SIRO is a wholesale open access network. The company was set up in 2015 to build Ireland’s first 100% fibre broadband network using ESB’s infrastructure to 50 towns in regional Ireland. SIRO is a challenger brand, driving competition in the broadband market and bridging the urban/rural digital divide in Ireland.

  1. Can you describe in one sentence what it is you do?

I manage SIRO’s largest retailer Vodafone with support from a brilliant group of people in our commercial, marketing and service delivery teams.

  1. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is winning new customers and seeing the difference our product is making to their lives.

  1. What was the best career lesson that you have learned?

The relationship with your boss is critical, in SIRO I am very fortunate to have a brilliant boss. Over my 20 year career there have been plenty of ups and downs but I have always had two or three people to go to when I needed some advice so important to have people like that in your life.

  1. Any thoughts on the current health of the Irish telecoms sector?

Exciting times for the Irish telecoms sector with major plans being announced by a number of the large players. Fibre for the first time will become a mass market category with SIRO having a significant role in this category. Bringing the fastest, most reliable and competitively priced 100% fibre network to 450,000 consumers throughout Ireland. On a personal note I am disappointed with the length of time it is taking to provide high speed broadband to people in rural Ireland.

  1. What is your favourite saying or piece of advice for life in general?

Be yourself, trust your gut, be kind, know your tribe, make a difference.
